We are happy to welcome you to the 12th European Open Energy Modelling Workshop in Grenoble, France.

The joint organizers are:

  • CRESYM: Collaborative Research for Energy SYstem Modelling
  • OTE: Observatoire de la Transition Energétique or Energy Transition Observatory which gathers several labs from the Université Grenoble Alpes.

The open energy modelling initiative (openmod) is one of the largest grassroots initiatives in the energy planning field. We exchange ideas and source code, lobby for policy support for open projects, actively share data, results, and know-how, and seek community-wide solutions to overarching challenges. Learn more about openmod by reading the manifesto.

We are expecting European researchers, laboratories and companies commited to open source practices to come and discuss energy system modelling for policy making, long-term planning, design and operation. Some keywords: open models and data, optimisation models, agent-based models, dynamic models, machine learning, sector-coupling, electricity markets and stability, hydrogen, heat, water, carbon, resources, justice, equity, resilience, global south.

This workshop is open to all researchers working on similar or related topics, whether they are experienced, beginners, from universities, research facilities or companies. Everyone is welcome to participate by contributing through a lightning talk and/or a poster or a breakout session (see the Call for participation session)

Call for participation

Lightning talk: A lightning talk is a very short presentation of your topic in 3–5 minutes. The aim is to provide some key information to the community or introduce your work to provoke informal discussions later on. Please indicate your contribution here after registration.

Posters: Please indicate your contribution here after registration.

Breakout groups: A breakout group is a session of 1.5–3.0 hours dedicated to a particular topic. It can take several forms including tutorials, trainings, brainworks, other do-a-thons, etc. Feel free to propose your own format! To indicate your contribution, please follow the instructions here after registration.

You are also welcome to suggest a short social activity alongside the event — typically before the first morning slot or at the end of the day. This can include, for instance, meditation, stretching, walking, debating, etc. Please contact us!

Publication of contents on the forum

Please note that your content needs to carry a CC‑BY‑4.0 license in order to be uploaded to the forum for distribution.

Poster printing

If you want your poster to be printed in Grenoble, please mention it on the form that has been sent to participants and follow these instructions:

  • Upload your poster here before March 20th
  • The format must be A0 PDF (84x120)
  • Retrieve it at the printer shop (700 meters from the MaCI: 1102 Av. Centrale, 38400 Saint-Martin-d’Hères)
  • Pay directly at the shop

The prices will degressive with the number of posters (22 euros/poster for 10 posters, 20 euros/poster for 25 posters etc., knowing that we currently have 38 participants with a poster).

Local visits

There will be two parallel visit sessions:

1) GreEn-ER / LNCMI / ABC:

  • The GreEn-ER (Grenoble Energy Research and Teaching) building, which is an innovative building with low energy consumption, self‑energy production, and monitoring. It hosts energy research facilities, including a living lab, and has a strong commitment to open science. (Confirmed)
  • The LNCMI (National Laboratory of High Magnetic Fields), which is working on solutions to recover its waste heat, provide flexibility to the power system, and is generally involved in sustainability issues as they relate to energy-intensive research facilities. (Confirmed)
  • The ABC residential building, designed to achieve a high level of autonomy in energy and water consumption. (Confirmed)

Visitors need to bring their ID document.

2) CEA:

  • The CEA-LITEN research center, including a research platform on batteries for mobility applications, and a platform on hydrogen technologies. (Confirmed) Visitors need to bring their ID document and send us a copy before February 29th.

The visit to Livet-et-Gavet will focus on the historically and technologically rich hydro-power plant. The plant is located next to the Grand’Maison dam 1, the biggest pumped storage facility in France. Transport will be by chartered bus. (Uncertain, to be confirmed.) Unfortunately cancelled due to the “Vigipirate” plan. Alternative activities: extra time for breakout groups, and short hike.

Accommodation options

The city of Grenoble is not huge, we would recommend you to choose your accommodation in the city center close to the B tram (typically between the stops “Île verte” and “Cité Internationale”, but closer to “Île verte” as we will spend the week on the eastern campus). The C tram can also bring you to the eastern campus. Moreover, city bikes can be booked for a few days at (select EN from menu):

Travel options

See the links of the MaCI and GreEn-ER buildings for direct access. From Germany and Austria, you can join with the night trains:

  • directly to Paris and then a 3 hour train journey from Paris to Grenoble
  • via Basel, Switzerland and then from Basel to Grenoble

Note these transport sites as well:

Lunches and coffee/tea/juice breaks will be provided at no cost. All meal options will be vegetarian/vegan. The social event will include an aperitif dinner (covered by the organizers).

Thanks for all your work organising the workshop! Do you know roughly when the official registration / selection of participants will happen? Just asking because I need to firm up some dates for the end of March. Thanks!

Dear Tom, registrations will open in the next few days (if not today)!
Best wishes

Hi Etienne, thanks a lot for organising this workshop. When I want to register, it tells me I cannot submit the form without ticking a box to hold a lightning talk/present a poster etc. Maybe I missed it, but how can I register if I only want to attend?
Thanks in advance!

Hi @etienne.cuisinier, similar to @thomgeo problem. I cannot submit the form without having at least one of the optional visits ticked. Thanks for organising!

Dear @MaxParzen , @thomgeo ,

Thanks for these messages, the form is now corrected:

  • you can now (obviously) register without the optional visits ticked
  • we added a box “attend only” if you want to participate without presenting poster, lightning talk or breakout group, but we would like to underline that we will prioritise those who do present.
