Comparison of Atlite vs PVLib/Windpowerlib — how to accurately model renewables generation?
Presenter: Florian Maurer
Description: We compare Atlite and PVLib/Windpowerlib for German solar and onshore wind in 2023 on a shared ERA5 cutout, from plant/farm scale (Campus Jülich PV, Kelmarsh SCADA) up to TSO zones and national ENTSO-E feed-in.
Holding weather fixed separates conversion and fleet choices from the weather product. Main findings: at plant scale the libraries agree closely; national wind gaps shrink once turbine/hub are aligned; national solar remains high vs public-grid feed-in (behind-the-meter and other residuals). Class aggregation also makes plant-level stacks competitive on runtime.
Background: Open energy models (e.g. AMIRIS, ASSUME, PyPSA-style workflows) often treat weather-to-power as a solved input, yet library and fleet assumptions can still move market and system results.
