Dear all,
With @Pimprenelle and @Justine_Duv, we are very pleased to submit the following Breakout group session for upcoming OpenMod workshop!
We look forward to hearing from you and reading your suggestions regarding this proposal.
Best, Arthur
Bringing Planetary boundaries and Energy Justice within Quantitative Modeling for energy planning
Format: Workshop & collective game
Organisers: @ArthurC, @Pimprenelle, @Justine_Duv, from CEA Grenoble
Preferred duration: 2 hours if possible, otherwise 3h.
Description:
This workshop invites participants to play with an energy system optimization model and collectively experiment with ways of embedding energy justice, planetary boundaries and social foundations into energy planning.
The session is organized as a collective game on a representative European case, run with CAIRN, an open-source energy model. Participants will collaboratively define justice-oriented constraints and scenarios (sufficiency levels, resource limits, equity targets), implement them live in the model, and discuss the resulting trade-offs between technological choices, resource use and equity outcomes across a set of indicators. The aim is twofold: (i) to explore methods for collaborative, co-constructed scenario building, and (ii) to gather feedback from the modeling community on how planetary boundaries and energy justice can be operationalized within an ESOM.
The session will unfold in two phases:
-
A gameplay phase, where participants negotiate and evaluate trade-offs between indicators.
-
A discussion phase reflecting on the modeling methods and on the integration of planetary limits and justice into energy planning.
Background:
-
This workshop is part of EQUALS project, a wider research work that aims to develop a prospective modeling framework that embeds energy justice, planetary boundaries and raw material availability at its core: https://arthurclerjon.github.io/equals/
-
The energy model with which we will play is CAIRN, an opensource energy model develop at CEA: Cairn Tool — Cairn 6.0.0 documentation
Requirements to play the game with your computer:(if you don’t have it, you can still come and try with another nice participant)
:
- GUI: Windows, also works with Linux + wine
- API: Windows, Linux + Python 3.13
The Cairn-Wise app game, used for the workshop is now available here: GitHub - CEA-Liten/Cairn-Wise · GitHub .
You can clone or download it prior to the workshop, or we will do so during the breakout group.
We are looking forward in meeting you !
