Tuesday 3rd March 2026 7 PM CET: What’s Broken About Industrial Electricity Pricing in Germany

Hi everyone!

I would like to invite the OpenMod community to our upcoming online workshop:

“What’s Broken About Industrial Electricity Pricing in Germany”

This session will be particularly relevant for modelers, researchers, and energy professionals working on power system transformation, industrial demand, and the integration of renewable energy into real-world markets.

We aim to address the following questions:
:red_question_mark: Why does industrial electricity pricing remain largely static despite rapidly growing renewable generation?
:red_question_mark: How do grid fees, tariffs, and pricing mechanisms distort incentives and increase costs for industrial consumers?
:red_question_mark: What are the system-level consequences of inflexible pricing in a renewable-dominated grid?
:red_question_mark: What structural changes are needed to better align pricing with real system conditions and renewable availability?

As solar and wind capacity expand, industrial electricity pricing is increasingly disconnected from actual system dynamics. This creates inefficiencies, raises costs, and limits the ability of industry to benefit from abundant renewable generation. This workshop provides a practical, system-level perspective on these structural challenges and their implications for energy system modeling and market design.

The European Energy Collective is a network of engineers, founders, and energy professionals working on structural challenges across Europe’s energy system, from grid resilience to market design and industrial decarbonization.
