Postdoc at TU Delft on advancing MGA in Energy

Hi,

I’m happy to share a postdoctoral researcher opportunity in my group at TU Delft, with a focus on advancing Modelling to Generate Alternatives (MGA) with application to energy system planning models.

For those unfamiliar with it, MGA is a family of methods that enables the production of many alternative, yet economically comparable, solutions from energy system models - as opposed to a single ‘cost-optimal’ solution - thereby significantly improving the understanding of trade-offs and consensus formation.

As we illustrate in a recent perspective article in Joule (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.joule.2025.102144), MGA has experienced unprecedented growth and development recently, demonstrating the potential to provide substantially more reliable and practically useful insights than cost optimisation and becoming a new standard in energy planning. At the same time, the ceiling for this method is still very high, and there are clear avenues for further, disruptive developments to be pursued.

With this postdoc position, we want to work on such new developments, including:

  • Ensuring interoperability across energy system modelling formulations and software.

  • Streamlining the understandability and usability of the more nuanced outputs it produces.

  • Further integrating it with information on the uncertainty associated with key parameters in the models, such as costs, demand and weather.

With best regards,
