About the Institute PTW and Our ETA Research Group
The PTW at the Technical University of Darmstadt is one of Germany’s leading research institutes in applied production research, focusing on advancing production technology. With over 70 research associates, PTW specializes in areas such as manufacturing technology, energy applications in production, industrial productivity, and management of industrial production. The ETA Factory on the Lichtwiese campus is a large-scale demonstration facility equipped with modern production machines, supply systems, and data technology, providing a practical environment for innovative research projects.

Research Focus
As a PhD candidate in the ETA research group, your will center on the following topics:

  • Project Participation: Engaging in applied research and industry projects on energy efficiency, flexibility, and resource efficiency.
  • System Planning and Optimization: Developing models for thermal systems at interconnected industrial sites.
  • Energy Transformation: Creating data-based concepts for heat transformation at complex industrial locations.
  • Supply Systems Enhancement: Optimizing industrial energy supply through intelligent operational strategies, automation architectures, and control concepts.
  • Knowledge Transfer: Contributing research findings to industry and society.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Managing and collaborating on research projects with industry and research partners.
  • Teaching and mentoring students, overseeing student projects, and coordinating student/research assistants.
  • Acquiring funding for public and industry-supported research projects.
  • Publishing research in scientific journals and presenting at conferences.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Technology, Industrial Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Basic programming skills (e.g., Python, Structured Text, Modelica is a plus).
  • Strong understanding of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and energy technology.
  • Optional knowledge in industrial energy procurement and supply, with relevant internships in the industry preferred.
  • Creative problem-solving skills, teamwork, communication abilities, and an independent work style.
  • Proficiency in German and English (spoken and written).

Compensation

  • Remuneration in accordance with the collective agreement for the Technical University of Darmstadt employees (TV - TU Darmstadt E13).
