Open data sources for power plants

Hello everyone,

I am currently working on gathering data for the North Sea Power system. I was wondering if anyone knows of an open-source platform that contains entries of power plants in European countries. I found the Pypsa powerplantmatching data online, but there is some noticable deviation especially regarding wind and solar when compared to ENTSOE-data. I also tested the Global energy monitor data (GEM), which had similar problems and less technologies in general.

I am happy about any input or ideas.

Jannis

Hi Jannis,
we came across a very similar problem for our latest study (currently under review). Depending on what spatial resolution/year you need it, the data published might help you. It tries to harmonize data from different sources. You can check out the preprint:

Wiegner, J. F., Gibescu, M., & Gazzani, M. (2024). Unleashing the full potential of the North Sea–Identifying key energy infrastructure synergies for 2030 and 2040. arXiv preprint arXiv:2411.00540.

and the github repository with code and data:

Note that this has not been done for Europe, but only for the North Sea states (which you said you are looking for). I hope this helps you a bit.

Best,
Jan
