Historic milestone for the open-source energy modelling ecosystem

Hi everyone,

Today, 7 October 2026, marks an historic milestone for the open energy modeling community:

  • ENTSO-E will now develop a multi-year implementation roadmap for further integrating open-source ecosystems into its system development toolchains. LinkedIn announcement.
  • OpenGrid: Today the Linux Foundation launched OpenGrid to accelerate global energy infrastructure planning through open source data standards and interoperable tools. This is co-funded/ supported by leading orgs in the space. LinkedIn announcement.

Many hands have brought us here. These developments bring us closer to making open energy planning mainstream - so the decisions shaping our energy future can be examined, reproduced and improved together, using open data wherever possible and private data where necessary.

Thank you to everyone contributing to this shared effort.

Best wishes,

Max

These are useful developments. Here is the media statement from The Linux Foundation:

Tom Brown @tom_brown , Matt Gray, and Luis Villa are quoted in that statement.

It is important for readers to note that the Community Specification License 1.0 public license with SPDX identifier Community-Spec-1.0, developed and promoted by the Linux Foundation for creating “open standards”, actually allows for patent claims under some circumstances. Here is the text:

I would advice open science projects to avoid using the Community-Spec-1.0 license and instead apply CC0‑1.0 OR MIT when seeking open semantic standards.

That’s an amazing development! It’s great to see how much has been achieved over the past decade in terms of open source and open data in this field.

Cheers to this milestone and to many more exciting developments to come!
