Fully-funded PhD position on "Multiscale Multilevel Energy Communities Optimization" at University of Pisa

Hello community,

on behalf of Prof. Antonio Frangioni, I’m posting the opportunity for a 3-year fully-funded Ph.D. position on “Multiscale Multilevel Energy Communities Optimization” available at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Pisa.

The Doctoral School of Computer Science of the University of Pisa is opening a call for a three-year, fully-funded Ph.D. position on energy optimization problems. The research is expected to cover both methodological aspects (large-scale optimization, convex optimization, stochastic optimization. decomposition methods, …) and applications, among which surely to energy systems and in particular to the optimal design, management and operations of Renewable Energy Communities.

The position is partially funded by the Italian PNRR (NEST - Network 4 Energy Sustainable Transition, Spoke 8 “Final use optimization, sustainability & resilience in energy supply chain”, Task 8.4.4 “Energy management optimisation, planning and design of smart buildings, smart districts, and Renewable Energy Communities”) and partly by the PGMO Project “Multiscale Multilevel Energy Optimisation with SMS++”. The student will be part of a vibrant research environment comprising a multidisciplinary team between Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, in the context of the UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Energy Communities
https://unescochair.unipi.it

and the Interdisciplinary Centre on Energy and Sustainable Development of the University of Pisa
https://ciress.it

as well as close collaboration with important industrial partners (EdF).

The student will have ample opportunity to steer the research lines along direction of her/his liking, albeit (this being a Computer Science Ph.D.) a significant implementation and testing part is expected, in particular using the advanced SMS++ software framework

developed at the Department of Computer Science and already used in several research projects, in particular regarding energy optimisation.
