3 PhD positions in Energy Transition and Industry Modeling

Dear all,

we currently have three open PhD positions open, in my new research group at the newly founded Interdisciplinary Transformation University in the beautiful city of Linz, Austria.

The research bridges multiple disciplines through computational modeling and quantitative analysis of energy systems, with a focus on transforming heavy industries like steel and chemicals. Topics include: hydrogen, electrification, competitiveness, global trade, value chains and transformation scenarios.

Methodologically, we employ open computational tools that bridge global scope with local detail. We combine global transformation pathways (e.g., based on the REMIND model maintained at PIK Potsdam) and global material flow analysis (flodym, REMIND-MFA) with detailed locational assessments of production costs and competitiveness (building on PyPSA and techno-economic analysis within the POSTED framework).

Candidates are encouraged to apply early, as review of applications will begin on a rolling basis. The call will close on 31 January 2026. Please contact Falko Ueckerdt falko.ueckerdt@it-u.at for any questions.

Thank you for applying or forwarding this within your organisations and networks.

Best regards!
Falko
